Where Ancient and Old are Connected in Time

The orange vase measures 30 cm x 18 cm, the small blue measures 17 cm x 12 cm, and the big blue vase measures 40 cm x 22. 5 cm.

This piece, titled Where Ancient and Old Are Connected in Time, explores the passage of time through the pâte de verre technique, which I chose because its inherent imperfections perfectly capture the idea of history’s subtle flaws and mysteries. Inspired by the Dionysus statue by George Blackall Simonds at the Shipley Gallery, the work reflects a sense of tradition and ancient celebration, emphasising how old and new can coexist. The translucent quality of pâte de verre allows light to pass through softly, giving the piece a fragile yet enduring presence.

Saphêneia

This piece measures approximately 22 cm x 18 cm.

My work, Saphēneia, meaning “clarity” in Greek, draws inspiration from the Dionysus statue by George Blackall Simonds at the Shipley Gallery. It feels like a small fragment of the statue has been captured and frozen in time, holding a stillness that invites reflection. The piece highlights the purity of glass and plays with light and reflections, showing the delicate craft of casting and mould-making while creating a quiet moment of clarity.
